Charlestown is the focus parish of our prayer this week. The cross crowns the spires of our churches; it rises above our graves, on the roadside it marks the spot where death claimed a life. Its image is traced on the forehead at baptism, confirmation and at the sacrament of the sick. With its sign we bless ourselves at the start and finish of our prayers and as we enter our churches and homes, with holy water, we sign ourselves with its image. On Good Friday we kiss or touch the cross reverently and often in death we pass from this life clasping it in our hands. The Cross is a symbol of suffering but through Christ, our Redeemer, it is also a symbol of salvation and glory. Through his cross, the cross of pain and suffering, the cross borne in obedience, the cross borne in love for all humankind, Christ brought freedom and salvation to the world. 'Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free, you are he Saviour of the world' We are praying for our diocese because .... as disciples of Jesus, as followers of the Lord, we need to be reminded again and again that there is no Christianity without the cross - the cross is central to the Christian life.
